Yet for most Tier 1 suppliers to major OEMs, it functions as a genuine market gatekeeper — automakers and their primary suppliers routinely won't award contracts or accept quotes from uncertified organizations, making certification a practical prerequisite for market participation rather than a formal legal one.
This expectation cascades down the supply chain contractually. The gap between "not legally required" and "practically impossible to do business without" is one I explain often to organizations new to automotive supply, because it shapes expectations differently than a genuine legal mandate would. A general manufacturer entering automotive supply for the first time sometimes assumes they can approach IATF 16949 the way they'd approach a nice-to-have credential — pursue it eventually, once the business case is clear. In practice, most Tier 1 relationships are foreclosed entirely without it already in place, since OEM sourcing decisions typically won't even shortlist an uncertified supplier for a new program. The certification isn't something you add after winning the business; it's usually the precondition for being considered at all.
